Strengthening Conservation Efforts At Mole National Park

Established in 1958, Mole National Park spans approximately 4,577 square kilometers. Historically, biodiversity monitoring relied on manual pen-and-paper tracking, and early digital tools were insufficient for the park's operational scale.

Through GLRSSMP support, we have modernized park surveillance by deploying the Earth Ranger system—a real-time GPS-based monitoring platform. To support this system, the project provided:

  • 30 GPS devices and 30 mobile phones for improved data collection;
  • An internet router and a flat-screen monitor for data management;
  • A dedicated server room for processing and storage; and
  • Technical training for wildlife rangers and management staff

This system enables live tracking of wildlife movements and operational activities. Rangers can now respond rapidly to threats, monitor animal populations accurately, and allocate resources effectively based on real-time data analysis.

Additionally, support under GLRSSMP and its precursor, the Sustainable Land and Water Management Project (SLWMP), has delivered the following:

  • Water Infrastructure: Constructed six (6) in-park waterholes to sustain wildlife watering, as well as Four (4) dugouts within fringe communities for livestock watering during the dry season. This helps protect animals searching for water and reduces zoonotic disease transmission.
  • Conflict Management: Strengthened human-wildlife conflict mitigation through the establishment of Protected Area Management Advisory Units (PAMAUs) and two Community Resource Management Areas (SOJAKODA and MAYABA CREMAs).
